Salon

Midgley. 1983. Animals and Why They Matter.
The Salon is an intellectually vibrant and interdisciplinary book club uniquely focused on works exploring animals, ethics, and pubic policy. It offers a distinctive space for members to sharpen their ethical thinking and deepen their understanding of how people, animals, and nature intersect in complex and often morally charged ways.

With over twenty carefully chosen books under its belt, the Salon’s focus is open-ended. Compassionate conservation, ethical theory, ethology, wildlife management and protection, entanglements between ecological and social theory, animal political theory, multispecies justice, and the social construction of nature are examples of some of the topics we have addressed. We bridge abstract theory with tangible empirical considerations with an eye to tangible policy outcomes. In so doing, we develop the moral acuity needed to navigate real-world policy decisions about animals.

As part of our educational program, PAN U, the Salon both builds our shared community while cultivating our professional development.
