Internships

PAN Works is pleased to partner with organizations in the educational and social sectors on internships when it serves all involved.

What They Are
The focus of our internships varies. In the past, we’ve had social media, web, and writing interns. Each of these requires distinct skill sets appropriate to the task. We are open to other kinds of internships as well.

Alongside their specified duties, interns directly participate in the life of our community through our PAN Thinks podcast, Salon book club, Slack digital commons, Mentorship in Public Writing, and Seminar Series on professional development. This experience provides interns with insight into the intellectual life of a think tank, and an opportunity to engage with ethical questions concerning people, animals, and nature.

Internships are overseen by Kris Stewart, PhD, in conjunction with an assigned mentor from PAN Works. Together, they help develop a job description with specific tasks, as well as oversee and evaluate an intern’s work. The expectations of the internship are outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the intern’s home institution.

Qualifications
Interns are generally masters and doctoral students, or undergraduate students of extraordinary ability. Interns should have substantive animal ethics, animal politics, public policy, and/or the science of animal wellbeing before applying.

Our internships are remote, volunteer, and unpaid positions without benefits. Interns must be fluent in spoken and written English and are responsible for their own computer and broadband access.

Applying
Those interested in applying for an internship should first submit a letter of intent. Based on that letter, we may ask for application materials, conduct an interview, and decide whether to move forward with the internship.
