Biography

Joann’s research focuses on the paradigm of One Health – the interdependence of the health and wellbeing of people, other animals, and nature, with a particular interest in its ethical underpinnings. She advocates for incorporating One Health and wellbeing into research, teaching, policies and practices from global to local levels.

Joann spent seven years living in the regions of Sabah (East Malaysia/North Borneo) as a teacher trainer, and the country of Niger working on zoonotic disease and health of nomadic pastoralist communities. These experiences inspire her ongoing publications in veterinary medical, public health, animal welfare and infectious diseases. Her most recent publication with Susan Cork, BVSc, PhD is a collection of international case studies showcasing the work of One Health practitioners and their case studies, published in 2025 by CAB International.

A graduate of Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and the Harvard School of Public Health, Joann is an adjunct Associate Professor of Public Health at Tufts University School of Medicine and Honorary Diplomate of the American Veterinary One Health Society (AVOHS). She also serves as Senior Editor of CABI One Health, member of the Interim Board of the One Health Commission, and Northeast Director of the Evidence-Based Veterinary Medical Association.

She is the former Chair of the One Health Commission Board of Directors and a member of its One Health Education Task Force. Before that she served as Senior Manager of Disaster Operations and Haiti Program with Humane Society International and at Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine where she directed the combined DVM-MPH degree program and taught courses in one health and conservation medicine.

A former EIS Officer and Fellow in the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s State-based Epidemiology for Public Health Practice Program, Joann was the recipient of a One Health grant from the Rockefeller Foundation to assess the application of One Health by physicians, veterinarians, and public health professionals during the avian influenza pandemic in Southeast Asia.

Joann is an avid competitive dragon boat racer and shameless lover of dogs.
