Placing Animals

Mark Twain on cats. Internet meme.
As an occasional series within the PAN Works Perspectives column, work under the Placing Animals project is intended to facilitate the expansion of accessible and thoughtful perspectives linking animals, ethics, and place into the public realm. As such, we are seeking short (~800-1,000 words) text-based and/or audio/visual submissions that are broadly accessible and substantively engaged with the geographic and moral-political dimensions of people-animal-nature interactions. We welcome scholars (including students), artists, and those in the public/private sectors working at the intersection of animals, place, space, and scale. We actively encourage submissions from the global community.

Pitch Instructions

Contributions should be ~800-1000 words long, written in fluent English of a conversational tone. First person is welcomed when appropriate. In-text links are encouraged, as is a list of further reading at the end of the essay. Please visit our Art section for examples of PAN Works’ interest in creative works that can also be proposed in support of this project.

To submit a pitch, please be in contact with our Series Editor, Monica Ogra. Our team will review your pitch and be in contact thereafter. In your pitch, please include the following information.

  • Subject line: PLACING ANIMALS
  • Your email and institutional affiliation
  • Link to your website/social media anchor (if applicable)
  • Your working title
  • A summary of your main point and messaging objectives in 250 words or less

If your pitch is accepted, the anticipated workflow will be as follows—pitch submission, pitch acceptance, submission of full article, article provisional acceptance; editing, final review, and online publication.
